Is it wrong to ask my boyfriend to get an STD test before I have sex with him?

He's had a lot of sexual partners and I'm a virgin. I'm going to Planned Parenthood next week for an exam to get on birth control. I suggested he go with me and get a STD test (he's admitted to not even using condoms in the past). He said this showed my lack of trust in him and refused to. Since lots of STDs don't have strong or immediate symptoms, I thought it'd only be safer for both of us if he did. Am I asking too much of him? Is it really a trust thing?
